“Can one have an organism without a species? Can one have a species without an organism? In a sense, the life of the organism is not the same as the existence of the species (insofar as the death of a single organism does not indicate the extinction of the species), although the concept of the organism presumes a prior concept of species. The category of species presumes the actual possibility of the organism (except in supernatural horror…), however this category may also persist even if there is no actual and living organism to authenticate it. What, then, is extinction? Can it be solely understood as the non-existence of the categorical species, when that non-existence is indelibly tied to the living or dying of actual, living organisms? Or is “extinction” neither simply the organism nor simply the species, but a particular relationship between them?”
